Parent Help

Attending parent help is great opportunity to watch what we do and to observe your child during a session and can be lots of fun, we hope you enjoy it.

Our Sessions

Each day a wide range of activities are set out for the children in the hall and, weather conditions permitting, the garden. With the exception of once or possibly twice per session when we bring the whole group together for a specific activity, we run the group on a free choice basis. Whilst this is ongoing, please feel free to join in with a group of children, read a story aloud in the book corner, “man” the climbing frame and so on. If you feel at a loose end, please ask a member of staff if they could suggest an area you can assist in. We are usually grateful of extra help on the craft table and the drawing table.

Helping in the Kitchen

We ask the parent helper to prepare the mid morning snack for the children. Please read and abide by the food hygiene notice on display (you can download a copy of the food hygiene notice here).

Please note our insurance policy specifies that no children be allowed into the kitchen. If your child is keen to be with you, then please leave the clearing up to someone else, and come and play in the main hall.

Group Activities

During the group activity you do not need to feel obliged to help tidy up the hall. You are welcome to join in the activity, as some children need as much adult support as possible at this stage of the session.

Your Child

Your pre-school child may well react differently when you are helping. They may be clingier, or ignore you completely. They may well become unusually boisterous with you in the room. Our advice is just to go with the flow. If they want you to be with them all morning, then just do that. The chances are that next time you help, they will react differently.

Younger Siblings

You are more than welcome to bring any younger siblings along with you. Obviously they are your responsibility, but they usually enjoy the experience. If you have a younger one, do not worry if they need a lot of your attention. You will still be more help than you might realise.

Health and Safety

Using the Toilet/Changing Clothes

You are not permitted to take a child to the toilet (save your own); nor can you change a child’s clothes, even if you have a current police check. Please inform a member of staff if a child requires this.

Accidents

If you are the first on the scene of an accident where bodily fluids are involved, please remember that you must wear protective gloves before the first contact. There are kept on the right hand side of the kitchen hatch with the First Aid Box. In such circumstances it is best to verbally reassure the child and immediately call over a member of staff.

Fire

In the event of a fire (or fire drill) you must vacate the building. Our muster point is at the bottom of the village hall car park, close to the recycling bins. You are responsible for ensuring that any younger, non pre-school children are with you. It is the Supervisor’s responsibility to ensure that your pre-school child is safely evacuated along with the rest of the group.
